Your score will depend on how many times you are spotted and how many kills you performed undetected. After you finish ea ch stage you'll get a score and a rank, ranging from Best(Grand master) to Worst(Thug). Tenchu is also one of those games where the more you play, the better you'll get, and you'll eventually find you'll shave minutes and perhaps even hours off your game play.
Some are more stronger and well-armed than others, so don't worry, the first stage boss is practically a cakewalk since his only attack is a gun, and all you gotta do is keep wailing on the guy so he can't shoot you. But at the end of each stage is usually a boss of some kind.
Basically the object is kind of like in Metal Gear: Avoid being detected by the enemy. The choice changes some dialogue and actually cuts out one or two fights in the framework of the game. in this game you can either play as Rikimaru or female ninja Ayame.
